Summer is a wonderful time in Arizona. The snowbirds have all returned home, and much of America goes elsewhere because vacationing in Arizona is extremely hot for those not familiar with our climate. But for residents, here’s the bonus: many of the finest hotels in Phoenix and Tucson become suddenly affordable. Take advantage of all Arizona has to offer with a truly stress-free, close-to-home staycation.
Phoenix
The Boulders – Recognized as one of the top resorts in the world, The Boulders has world-class golf, an award-winning spa, pools, tennis courts, guided hikes, moonlight bike rides, horseback riding, rock climbing, stargazing, and more. Of course, you could always just lounge in your room, casita, or villa, and dine in any of the five restaurants. The best part is that a room that would cost $500 in the winter is only a little over $100 in the summer.
Tempe Mission Palms – If you’re looking for something a bit more urban, Tempe Mission Palms in the heart of Tempe’s downtown area fits the bill. Summer means ASU students are gone, so all the great shops and restaurants on Mill Avenue are doofus-free. Plus, attractions like Tempe Town Lake, the Desert Botanical Garden, Papago Park, and the Phoenix Zoo are only minutes away. Travel sites list a price of $116 per night, down from $189 per night in-season.
The Phoenician – If you think luxury and inexpensive are mutually exclusive, check out the Phoenician. This top-rated resort is undergoing renovation from May to September, causing minor inconveniences that can save you a lot. Over the summer, you can get a room at this usually unaffordable, premier luxury resort for $119; wait until autumn and that same room will cost $569.
Tucson
The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain – Tucson’s most stunning resort has all the sumptuousness you’d expect from the Ritz-Carlton, but it has one thing you may not expect: great prices. Stay during weekdays between June 4 and September 7, and pay only $159 per night. Starting September 8, expect to pay $359 for the same room.
Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Resort – The breathtaking, natural, 500-acre landscape of this resort includes some of the most pristine desert and mountain vistas in the Southwest. Relax by the pool, or take a ride down the 143-foot waterslide, play tennis, golf, visit the spa, or dine at one of five award-winning restaurants. A summer staycation will cost about $129 per night. Wait until the weather cools down, and pay $209 for the same room.
The Westin La Paloma – While The Westin La Paloma has plenty of adult amenities—golf, tennis, five pools, workout and yoga classes, private cabanas, and six restaurants—kids will love The Westin, too. Besides planned activities at the Westin Family Kids Club, there’s the 177-foot SlideWinder water slide. Book in the summer using one of their seasonal offers, and get a traditional room for only $118 per night. Book that same room over a normally costly holiday weekend, like Thanksgiving, and pay only $14 more—$132 per night.
